【ローマ】コロッセオとウェスパシアヌス帝 Roma - Colosseo and Vespasianus

ホテルにチェックインを済ませて、まだ時間が早かったので、まずはコロッセオに行くことにした。

テルミニ駅からメトロコロッセオ駅は2つ目。あっという間に着いてしまう。

さすが、ローマの観光の目玉とも言えるコロッセオの最寄りの駅はすごい人混みだ。人混みの流れに乗って改札を出ると、目の前に巨大な古代ローマ世界が現れた。 

After checking in at the hotel, it was too early, so I decided to go to the Colosseum first.

Metro Colosseo station is the second from Termini station. It arrives in no time.

As expected, the nearest station to the Colosseum, which can be said to be the centerpiece of sightseeing in Rome, is extremely crowded. When I got out of the ticket gate in the crowd, a huge ancient Roman world appeared in front of me.

これまで写真やテレビで何度となく目にしてきたコロッセオだが、初めて目の前にすると、その巨大さに改めて驚かされる。

高さ57メートル、最大横幅188メートルを誇り、5万人を収容するというそうした数字以上に、とにかく巨大だという印象だった。

それは、このコロッセオが作られてから800年以上も経っているというその時間の長さも関係しているのかもしれない。

このコロッセオは、悪名高き皇帝ネロの跡を継いだ、ウェスパシアヌス帝が72年に建設を始めさせて、80年に次のティトゥス帝の時代に完成した。

作られた場所は、ネロが住んでいた黄金宮にあった巨大な人工池の跡地に作られた。

レンガが積み上げられているが、全体は古代のコンクリートで支えられていて、古代ローマの建築技術の高さを目の当たりにすることができる。

皇帝ネロが自殺した後、何人も皇帝が入れ替わった後で、軍人だったウェスパシアヌスが皇帝となった。

それまでの皇帝は、初代皇帝のアウグスティヌスの血統につながる人々だったが、ウェスパシアヌスからはおよそ30年間は、ウェスパシアヌスの2人の子供が皇帝を引き継ぎ、フラティウス朝と言われる。

おそらくウェスパシアヌス帝は、ネロの死後のローマ帝国の混乱が終わったことの象徴として、この巨大な競技場を作ろうと考えたのだろう。

ネロの黄金宮の跡地に作ったのはそうした意味もあるのだろうが、残念ながら現代ではネロのことはよく知られているが、ウェスパシアヌスの名前はあまり知られているとは言えない。

The Colosseum was completed in 80 by the next Emperor Titus, when Emperor Vespasian, who succeeded the infamous Emperor Nero, began construction in 72.

The place where it was made was the site of a huge artificial pond in the Golden Palace where Nero lived.

The bricks are piled up, but the whole is supported by ancient concrete, and you can witness the high level of ancient Roman architectural technology.

After the emperor Nero committed suicide and several emperors were replaced, the military man Vespasian became the emperor.

Until then, the emperors were related to the lineage of the first emperor, Augustinus, but for about 30 years from Vespasian, two children of Vespasian took over the emperor, and it is said to be the Fratius dynasty.

Perhaps Vespasian wanted to create this huge stadium as a symbol of the end of the turmoil of the Roman Empire after Nero's death.

It may have such a meaning that it was made on the site of the Golden Palace of Nero, but unfortunately Nero is well known in modern times, but the name of Vespasian is not well known.
