【ローマ】バルベリーニ宮の猫たち Roma - Cats living in Palazzo Barberini

 

イタリアの各都市では、野良猫を見かける機会が多かった。

中でも、このローマではその機会がもっとも多かった気がする。

In each Italian city, I often saw stray cats.

このバルベリーニ宮でも、多くのネコを見かけた。

餌を入れる皿などが置いてあったので、この美術館のスタッフなどが、水やエサをあげているようだ。

I saw many cats in this Palazzo Barberini.

There was a plate to put food in, so it seems that the staff of this museum are giving water and food.

多少近づいても、逃げる様子もない。人馴れしているようだ。

あるいは、自分たちは立派な宮殿に暮らしているのだから、世界中から訪れる観光客たちのことを、多少は見下しているのかもしれない。

動物たちに優しい町は、人間にも優しい、という誰かの言葉を思い出した。

I remembered someone's words that an animal-friendly town is also human-friendly.

もともと、ネコは古代エジプトではネコは神の姿で描かれていて、他の国に持ち出すことは禁止されていたという。

しかし、航海の際に船の中でネズミを退治することから重宝されて、ギリシャ人やフェニキア人の船を通じて古代ローマにもネコが持ち込まれたようだ。

Originally, cats were depicted in the image of a god in ancient Egypt, and it was forbidden to take them out to other countries.

However, it seems that cats were brought to ancient Rome through Greek and Phoenician ships, which was useful for exterminating rats on board during the voyage.

バルベリーニ宮のネコたちは、そうした自分たちの歴史には何にも興味なさそうに、ただただ日がな一日をくつろいでいるようだった。
