【ローマ】ヴァチカン タペストリーと地図のギャラリー Roma - Musei Vaticani, Galleria degli Arazzi & delle Carte Geografiche

 

ヴァチカン美術館のハイライトとも言える、教皇宮殿やシスティーナ礼拝堂へ向かうには、長大な回廊を歩いて行く必要がある。

その回廊には、タペストリーのギャラリーと地図のギャラリーと呼ばれる場所がある。

To reach the highlights of the Vatican Museums, the Apostolic Palace and the Sistine Chapel, you have to walk through a long corridor.

The corridor has a place called the Tapestry Gallery and the Map Gallery.

これまでの古代ローマ時代の彫刻の展示などとは違って、この2つのギャラリーをじっくりと見ている人はほとんどない。

ほとんどの人にとっては、この2つのギャラリーはシスティーナ礼拝堂への通り道のようだ。

このタペストリーのギャラリーには、かつてはラファエロが下絵を描いたタペストリーが展示されていた。

そのタペストリーのためのラファエロの下絵は、現在はイギリス、ロンドンのヴィクトリア＆アルバート博物館の巨大な展示室に飾られている。

Unlike traditional Roman sculpture exhibits, few people take a closer look at these two galleries.

For most people, these two galleries are like a path to the Sistine Chapel.

The tapestry gallery used to showcase the tapestries that Raphael drew.

Raphael's sketches for the tapestry are now displayed in the huge exhibition room of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England.

タペストリーのギャラリーに続いて、地図のギャラリーが現れる。

両側の壁に、延々と巨大な地図が展示されている。

Huge maps are displayed endlessly on the walls on both sides.

16世紀末に教皇となったグレゴリウス13世は、イタリア全体を地図で表すことを計画して、天文学である数学者でもあったイニャツィオ・ダンティにこれらの地図を作らせた。

Pope Gregory XIII, who became Pope at the end of the 16th century, planned to map the whole of Italy and had the astronomy mathematician Ignacio Danti make these maps.

その時代に地図を作ることは、政治的にその地を支配することも意味した。

グレゴリウス13世は、教皇がイタリア全体を支配している、ということをこうした地図を展示することでアピールしたかったのだろう。

Making a map at that time also meant politically controlling the land.

Pope Gregory XIII would have wanted to showcase these maps that the Pope controls the whole of Italy.

地図のギャラリーの天井には、キリスト教にまつわる様々なテーマの絵画が描かれている。

イタリア全土の地図の上に、キリスト教の絵画が描かれているということは、イタリアという国がカトリック・キリスト教の支配下に置かれている、ということを意味しているのだろう。

しかし、このギャラリーの地図や絵画をせいぜいチラ見する程度で行きすぎる人々の姿を見ると、グレゴリウス13世のそうした政治的な意図は、現代の人々にはあまりよく伝わっていないようだ。

On the ceiling of the map gallery, paintings of various themes related to Christianity are drawn.

The fact that Christian paintings are drawn on a map of the whole of Italy may mean that the country of Italy is under the control of Catholic Christianity.

However, looking at the people who go too far by glancing at the maps and paintings in this gallery, it seems that the political intentions of Pope Gregory XIII are not well communicated to modern people.
