【ローマ】ヴァチカン 古代絵画館 Roma - Musei Vaticani, Collection of Ancient Painting

 

ヴァチカン美術館の観光の目玉であるシスティーナ礼拝堂は、入り口から一番奥の方にあり、そこを見学したとは、来た時とは反対側の回廊を通ってまだ入り口の方に戻ってくることになる。

その途中途中にも、様々な見どころがある。

小さな小部屋の中にある古代絵画館には、その名の通り、古代の時代に描かれた絵画が展示されていた。

上の写真の上部の2枚の絵は、紀元前1世紀頃に描かれた、古代ギリシャのオデッセウスの神話の中の情景を描いた連作。

ケネス・クラークの『風景絵画論』の冒頭でも紹介されているとても有名な絵画だ。

現代の緻密な風景画に比べると見劣りするかもしれないが、中世ヨーロッパの素朴な絵画などと比べると、より写実的な表現になっている。

古代ローマにおいてはこうした絵画が豊かな人々の邸宅の壁を飾っていたのだろう。

しかし、その後の古代ローマの滅亡とともにこうした絵画を描く技術は忘れられて、私たちが知っている中世ヨーロッパの絵画は実に素朴な描写にとどまっている。

やがて12世紀以降に東ローマ帝国などからの影響を受けて、こうした写実的な描写は復活して、やがてルネサンスを迎えることになった。

これらの絵画が展示されている小さな部屋は、アルドブランディーニの結婚の間と呼ばれている。

何気なく通り過ぎてしまうほどの小さなスペースだが、その中では古代ローマの雰囲気と、それが発見された時代の雰囲気が、濃厚に感じられるスペースになっている。
