【ローマ】ヴァチカン 旧ヴァチカン教皇庁図書館 Roma - Musei Vaticani, Former Vatican Papal Library

 

ヴァチカン美術館の東側の回廊には、かつてのヴァチカン教皇図書館があった。

ヴァチカンに最初に図書館を作ったのは、ニコラウス5世だった。

ニコラウス5世は、教皇になる前の1444年にヨーロッパで最初の図書館であるフィレンツェのサン・マルコ修道院の図書館を作った人物でもある。

1447年にローマ教皇となり、1448年にヴァチカンにも図書館を創設した。

In the eastern corridor of the Vatican Museums was the former Vatican Library.

Pope Nicholas V was the first to build a library in the Vatican.

Pope Nicholas V was also the founder of the San Marco Monastery in Florence, the first library in Europe in 1444, before he became Pope.

He became Pope in 1447 and founded a library in Vatican in 1448.

その後、シクトゥス4世の時代になり、図書館は拡張されていった。当時の図書館長で人物主義者でもあったプラティーノは、教皇の意思を実現していった。

シクトゥス4世は、システィーナ礼拝堂を作った教皇であり、また、フィレンツェのメディチ家を追い落とすためのクーデター、パッティ家の陰謀の黒幕でもあった。

Then, in the era of Siktus IV, the library was expanded. Platino, the librarian and characterist at the time, realized the Pope's will.

Siktus IV was the Pope who built the Sistine Chapel and was the mastermind behind the plot of the Patty family, a coup to oust the Medici family in Florence.

そして、1587年にシクトゥス5世によって、現在のヴァチカン教皇庁図書館が建てられた。

1585年に日本から天正遣欧少年使節がローマを訪れた時に、ちょうどこのシクトゥス5世が教皇として選ばれている。

彼らはこのシクトゥス5世の絢爛豪華な戴冠式に出席した。

Then, in 1587, Siktus V built the current Vatican Library.

When the Tensho embassy of Europe visited Rome in 1585, this Siktus V was just elected Pope.

They attended this gorgeous coronation of Siktus V.

かつての図書館があった場所には、現在は十字架の形をした聖具などの品々が展示されている。

In the place where the library used to be, items such as crucifix-shaped sacred tools are now on display.
