【ローマ】サン・ピエトロ大聖堂 ブラマンテ Roma - Basilica di San Pietro and Bramante

 

バチカン博物館を出て、高い城壁沿いの道をたどってサン・ピエトロ大聖堂に向かった。

しばらくすると、広大なサン・ピエトロ広場にたどり着いた。カトリック教会の総本山であるサン・ピエトロ大聖堂が広場の向こうに見える。

これまで幾度となく、テレビのニュース映像などで見てきたその姿は、その場に立ってみると、その巨大さを改めて実感できる。

I left the Vatican Museum and followed the road along the high walls to St. Peter's Basilica.

After a while, I arrived at the vast St. Peter's Square. St. Peter's Basilica, the headquarter of the Catholic Church, can be seen beyond the square.

The appearance that I have seen on TV newsreels many times until now can be realized once again when I stand there.

このサン・ピエトロ大聖堂が立っている場所は、聖ペテロが紀元64年ごろにローマ帝国によって十字架に逆さに架けられて処刑された場所と言われている。

その後、ローマ帝国においてキリスト教を公認したコンスタンティヌス帝はこの場所に聖堂を建てて、聖ペテロの遺体をその地下に改めて埋葬した。

その聖堂は、ルネサンスの時代まで残り、聖堂として利用されていた。

ついさっき見てきた、ヴァチカン博物館のラファエロの間の絵の中にも、その古い聖堂を描いた絵があった。

そのラファエロの間に絵を描かせた教皇のユリウス2世が、ドナト・ブラマンテに命じて新しい聖堂の建設を始めさせたのは、1506年のことだった。

The place where St. Peter's Basilica stands is said to be the place where St. Peter was executed upside down on the cross by the Roman Empire around 64 AD.

Later, Constantine, who officially recognized Christianity in the Roman Empire, built a shrine in this place and buried the body of St. Peter again in the basement.

The cathedral remained until the Renaissance and was used as a cathedral.

In the painting between Raffaello in the Vatican Museum that I just saw, there was a painting depicting the old cathedral.

It was in 1506 that Pope Julius II, who had the paintings during the Raffaello, ordered Donato Bramante to begin the construction of a new cathedral.

ドナト・ブラマンテは、1444年頃にウルビーノ近郊で生まれ、画家を目指してマンテーニャに絵を学び、その後は装飾壁画の制作などに関わり建築も手がけるようになっていった。

ミラノのスフォルツァ家に使えていた時には、レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチとも交友があり、ダ・ヴィンチの最後の晩餐があるサンタ・マリア・デッレ・グラーツィエ教会の改築にも携わった。

その後、活動の拠点をローマに移して、ユリウス2世から新しい教会の建設を任されることになった。

ブラマンテは古代ギリシャ、ローマの建築を徹底的に研究した。とりわけウィトルウィウスの『建築書』から多くを学んだ。

ブラマンテは、この新しい教会の形を正方形の十字架の形に設計した。中央にドームを持ち、その周囲のそれより小さい礼拝堂とそのドームが取り囲むという設計だった。

その形は、ダ・ヴィンチがスケッチした聖堂の形によく似ている。ブラマンテはミラノ時代にダ・ヴィンチからそのアイデアを得たのかもしれない。

Donato Bramante was born in the suburbs of Urbino around 1444, studied painting with Mantegna with the aim of becoming a painter, and after that he became involved in the production of decorative mural paintings and began to work on architecture.

When he was used by the Sforza family in Milan, he was also friends with Leonardo da Vinci and was involved in the reconstruction of the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where Da Vinci's Last Supper was held.

After that, he moved his base of activities to Rome and was entrusted with the construction of a new church by Pope Julius II.

Bramante thoroughly studied ancient Greek and Roman architecture. He learned a lot, especially from Vitruvian's De Architectura.

Bramante designed the shape of this new church in the shape of a square cross. He had a dome in the center and was designed to be surrounded by a smaller chapel and the dome around it.

Its shape is very similar to the shape of the cathedral sketched by Da Vinci. Bramante may have got the idea from Da Vinci during the Milan era.

ブラマンテはこの聖堂の完成を目にすることなく、1514年に病で亡くなってしまった。

ブラマンテの死後、同郷のラファエロが設計主任の地位を引き継いだ。ブラマンテはユリウス2世にラファエロを推薦し、ラファエロは多くの作品をこのヴァチカンに残した。

しかし、1520年にはそのラファエロも無くなってしまい、壮大なこの教会の建築は迷走を続けることになる。

ブラマンテの設計案を元に作られた、サン・ピエトロ大聖堂を描いたメダルが残っているが、そこに刻まれている建物の形は現在のものとはかなり異なっている。

果たしてブラマンテは、天国からこのサン・ピエトロ大聖堂をどのような思いで見つめているのだろうか。

Bramante died of illness in 1514 without seeing the completion of the cathedral.

After Bramante's death, his hometown Raphael took over the position of chief designer. Bramante recommended Raphael to Pope Julius II, who left many works in the Vatican.

However, in 1520, Raphael disappeared, and the magnificent architecture of this church continued to stray.

There is a medal depicting St. Peter's Basilica, which was based on Bramante's design, but the shape of the building engraved on it is quite different from the current one.
