続いては。ヴェネツィア派の画家たちの作品を見ていこう。

ジョバンニ・ベッリーニが、磔刑で亡くなったキリストの手を優しくマグダリアのマリアが握っている。

その背後に描かれているヨセフ、ニコデモも、哀悼の意を表してか、目を瞑っている。

全員が目を瞑っていて、まるで全員が瞑想しているように見えて、何とも不思議な雰囲気をたたえている。

Giovanni Bellini is gently holding the hand of Christ, who died in the crucifixion, by Mary Magdalene.

Joseph and Nicodemus depicted behind it are also closing their eyes, perhaps in condolences.

Everyone is closing their eyes, it looks like they are meditating, and it has a mysterious atmosphere.

ティツィアーノの『聖母子と聖人たち』。通称、フラーリの聖母と言われる作品。

元々は、ヴェネツィアのある教会のための祭壇画として描かれた。

一時は、ラファエロの『キリストの変容』の隣に展示されていたという。確かに構図が似通っているし、天上のキリストと聖母子という取り合わせのせいかもしれないが、ティツィアーノがいかに高く評価されていたかがよくわかる。

Originally painted as an altarpiece for a church in Venice.

At one point, it was exhibited next to Raphael's Transfiguration. It's true that the composition is similar, and maybe because of the combination of Christ in heaven and the Virgin and Child, but it's easy to see how much Titian was valued.

ヴェロネーゼの聖家族。

ヴェロネーゼは、ティツィアーノやティントレットと並ぶヴェネツィア派の巨匠だが、聖書を題材にした物語を、あまりにも世俗的な解釈で描きすぎるとして、異端審問に召喚されたこともあった。

しかし、こうしてヴェロネーゼの絵をヴァチカンの絵画館で目にすることができるということは、幸いなことに現在ではそうした蟠りは消えてしまったようだ。

Veronese, a Venetian master alongside Titian and Tintoretto, was sometimes summoned to the Inquisition for portraying Bible-themed stories too secularly.

Fortunately, however, the fact that Veronese's paintings can be seen in the Vatican's Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery now seems to have disappeared.
