【ローマ】サン・ピエトロ大聖堂 ミケランジェロのピエタ Roma - Basilica di San Pietro and Michelangelo's Pieta

 

サン・ピエトロ大聖堂に入ってすぐ、右手に、ミケランジェロのピエタがある。

21歳の若きミケランジェロの作品で、これまでテレビや写真などで何度も目にしてきた。

ヴァザーリによれば、ミケランジェロはフィレンツェで小さなキューピッド像を作ったが、それをある人物がローマに持ち込んで、自分のぶどう園に植えて、ローマ時代のキューピッド像が見つかったと宣伝した。

そのキューピッド像の見事さに、誰もがそれをローマ時代のものであることを疑わなかったという。

その出来事をきっかけに、ミケランジェロはローマに呼ばれて、そこで1年ほど滞在していくつかの作品を制作した。このピエタもそうした作品の一つだった。

Immediately after entering the Cathedral of San Pietro, Michelangelo's Pieta is on your right.

It is a work of 21-year-old young Michelangelo, and I have seen it many times on TV and photographs.

According to Vasari, Michelangelo made a small Cupid statue in Florence, but a person brought it to Rome and planted it in his vineyard, advertising that a Roman Cupid statue was found.

No one doubted that the Cupid statue was Roman.

In the wake of that event, Michelangelo was called to Rome, where he stayed there for about a year to produce several works. This Pieta was one of those works.

さすがによく知られた作品だけあって、多くの人々がこのピエタの前に群がって、写真を撮ったりじっくりと眺めたりしている。

この像は、フランスのサン・ドニ枢機卿の注文によって作られて、初めは別な場所にある礼拝堂に置かれていた。

十字架から降ろされたキリストを抱く聖母マリアが、まるで少女のように若々しく表現されていることについて批判する声もあったが、ヴァザーリはそれらの批判を一蹴し、汚れなき女性はいつまでもかくも美しいものだ、とこの作品を擁護している。

There are only well-known works, and many people flock to this Pieta to take pictures and take a closer look.

The statue was made by the order of Cardinal Saint-Denis of France and was initially placed in a chapel elsewhere.

Some criticized the Virgin Mary holding Christ down from the cross for being portrayed as youthful as a girl, but Vasari dismissed those criticisms, and the unclean woman forever forever. He defends this work as beautiful.

このピエタ像はすぐに評判を呼んだが、まだミケランジェロの名前はローマではあまり知られておらず、この像の作者として別な人物の名前が挙げられることがあった。

ミケランジェロは、そうした噂を聞いて憤慨して、夜中の礼拝堂に忍び込んで、この像に自分の名前を刻み込んだと言われている。

ミケランジェロはその後フィレンツェに戻り、あの有名なダヴィデ像を制作した。

ミケランジェロは、晩年をこのローマで過ごし、システィーナ礼拝堂のフレスコ画の制作や、サン・ピエトロ寺院の建設に関わり、1564年に88歳で亡くなった。

神のこどき、という形容詞とともに呼ばれることが多いミケランジェロ。

このピエタ像のキリストには、汚れなき心のままで生涯にわたり作品を作り続けたミケランジェロの姿がどうしても重なってしまう。

The statue of Pieta quickly gained popularity, but Michelangelo's name was not well known in Rome, and the name of another person was sometimes mentioned as the author of the statue.

Michelangelo is said to have been indignant at hearing such rumors and sneaked into the chapel in the middle of the night, engraving his name on the statue.

Michelangelo then returned to Florence, where he created the famous statue of David.

Michelangelo spent his last years in Rome, working on frescoes for the Sistine Chapel and building the San Pietro Temple, and died in 1564 at the age of 88.

Michelangelo is often referred to with the adjective "God's child".

Michelangelo, who continued to make works throughout his life with an unclean heart, inevitably overlaps with Christ in this statue of Pieta.
