【ローマ】ジェズ教会 Roma - Chiesa del Gesu

ナヴォーナ広場に面したカフェで、一休みしていた際に、ジェズ教会を訪れることを忘れていたことに気がついた。

そこで、トッレ・アルジェンティーナ広場の方に戻り、ジェズ教会へ向かった。

このイエズス会のための教会は、ファルネーゼ枢機卿が資金を提供し、ジャコモ・バロッツィ・ダ・ヴィニョーラの設計で1568年に建築が始められた。

ヴィニョーラは、パラディオやセルリオらと共にルネサンス期を代表する建築家で、フランソワ1世にフォンテーヌブロー宮殿に招かれたこともあり、ヨーロッパにルネサンス様式の建築を広めることに貢献した建築家の一人だ。

When I was taking a rest at the cafe facing Piazza Navona, I realized that I had forgotten to visit the Jez Church.

Then I returned to Torre Argentina Square and headed for the Church of Gesu.

The church for the Jesuits, funded by Cardinal Farnese, was designed by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola and began construction in 1568.

Vignola, along with Palladio and Serrio, is one of the leading Renaissance architects, who was invited to the Fontainebro Palace by Francois I and contributed to the spread of Renaissance architecture in Europe.

 

内部に入ると、豪華で壮麗な空間が現れて、訪れる人々を圧倒する。

その華やかな雰囲気は、今回の旅で訪れた数多くの教会の中でも、最も印象に残ったものの一つだった。

ヴィニョーラは1571年に亡くなり、その後を弟子のジャコモ・デッラ・ポルタが引き継いだ。

デッラ・ポルタは、ヴィニョーラが設計したシンプルなファサードを、2層式にするなどの変更を加えて、教会の建物は1580年に完成した。

デッラ・ポルタは、ミケランジェロが設計したサン・ピエトロ大聖堂のドームを完成させて人物でもある。

Once inside, a gorgeous and magnificent space appears, overwhelming the visitors.

The gorgeous atmosphere was one of the most memorable of the many churches I visited on this trip.

Vinola died in 1571, after which his disciple Giacomo della Porta took over.

The church building was completed in 1580 by Della Porta, with changes such as a two-story facade designed by Vinola.

Della Porta is also the man who completed the dome of St. Peter's Basilica designed by Michelangelo.

ジェズ教会の内部は、バロック時代に装飾されたもので、とりわけ天井の煌びやかさに、思わず声をあげそうになってしまった。

中央の天上画は、バチッチョが描いた”イエスの御名の勝利”で、中央にはイエズス会のマークにもなっているイエスという文字が見える。

天井画の周辺には、アントニオ・ラッジによるストゥッコ彫刻が、まるで天上画の一部のように配置されていて、天上全体を立体的に見せている。

この構想は、ベルニーニによるもので、その空間設計の見事さには驚かされた。

The interior of the Chiesa del Gesu was decorated during the Baroque era, and the glittering ceilings made me almost cry out.

The heavenly painting in the center is "Victory in the name of Jesus" drawn by Bachicho, and in the center you can see the letters Jesus, which is also the mark of the Jesuits.

Around the ceiling painting, Antonio Raggi's Stucco sculpture is arranged like a part of the heavenly painting, giving the whole heavenly appearance three-dimensionally.

This idea was created by Bernini, and I was amazed at the splendid design of the space.

いくら見ていても見飽きないほどの豪華な天上だが、ずっと見上げていると流石に首が痛くなってくる。

そんな人のためだろうか、天井の真下には大きな鏡が置かれていて、わざわざ首を曲げて見上げなくても、天井の様子をじっくりと眺められるようになっていた。

No matter how much you look at it, it's a gorgeous heaven that you won't get tired of seeing, but if you look up all the time, your neck will hurt.

Perhaps for such a person, there was a large mirror underneath the ceiling so that I could take a closer look at the ceiling without having to bend my neck and look up.
