【ローマ】スペイン広場 Roma - Piazza di Spagna

 

トレヴィの泉から、狭い通りを通り抜けながら、スペイン広場に向かった。

そのトレヴィの泉と並んで、このスペイン広場もローマの代名詞とも言える観光スポットだ。

何と言っても、オードリー・ヘップバーンとグレゴリー・ペックが出演した『ローマの休日』の中で、ヘップバーンがジェラートを食べるシーンが、この広場の存在を特別なものにした。

その映画を見た人は、誰でもヘップバーンのように、この広場の階段でジェラートを頬張りたくなるだろうが、現在ではこの場所では、ジェラートを食べることはおろか、座ることも禁止されている。

スペイン広場の階段の上には、トリニタ・デイ・モンティ教会があり、2つの尖塔がとても印象的だ。

現在では、スペイン広場と呼ばれているが、当初はこの教会の前の広場であることから、トリニタ広場と呼ばれることもあったという。

美術史家のマリオ・プラーツは、この広場にまつわる面白いエピソードを『ローマ百景』の中で紹介している。

教会と広場の間にはかつては高い崖が聳えていた。この辺りの土地はもとはフランスのもので、フランスは建築家のフラチェスコ・デ・サンクティスに依頼して教会と広場をつなぐ階段を作らせた。
