【ローマ】カンピドーリオ広場 Roma - Piazza del Campidoglio

 

古代ローマの都は、7つの丘を中心に構成されていたと言われるが、その中でも最も高い丘がカンピドリオの丘だ。

位置的にもローマのほぼ中心にあるため、現在でも多くの観光施設があって、いつでも多くの人で賑わっている。

この丘には古代ローマの建国以前、紀元前1300年頃の鉄器時代から人々が住んでいた痕跡が残っているという。

Because it is located almost in the center of Rome, there are many tourist facilities even now, and it is always crowded with many people.

It is said that there are traces of people living on this hill from the Iron Age around 1300 BC, before the founding of ancient Rome.

丘の下から階段を上がると、広場の入り口の両側には帝制ローマ時代に作られた巨大なカストルとボルックス像が迎えてくれる。

双子座の人間であれば、それだけでテンションが上がってくる。

広場に入ると、正面にローマ市庁舎の建物が堂々とした佇まいで立っている。その前には、レプリカだがモマルクス・アウレリウス帝の騎馬像がある。

左右にも建物があり、閉鎖的な空間だが、建物は高くなく上の空も広がっていて、そうは感じさせず開放的な広場になっている。

この広場を設計したミケランジェロの建築家としてのセンスが光っている。

ミケランジェロは、このカンピドーリオ広場の全体の設計と、ローマ市庁舎の正面部分を設計したが、その完成を見ずに亡くなってしまった。

その後を継いだのはジャコモ・デッラ・ポルタ。デッラ・ポルタは同じくミケランジェロが設計したサン・ピエトロ大聖堂のドームの建設も引き継いでいる。

また、デッラ・ポルタは直接の師匠だったジャコモ・バロッツィ・ダ・ヴィニョーラがその建設途中で亡くなったジェズ教会も引き継いでいる。

ジャコモ・デッラ・ポルタという建築家は、巨匠や師匠の設計を完成させる、という運命を与えられていたようだ。

Michelangelo designed the entire Piazza del Campidoglio and the facade of Rome's City Hall, but died before it was completed.

He was succeeded by Giacomo della Porta. Della Porta also took over the construction of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica, also designed by Michelangelo.

Della Porta also took over the Church of the Gesu, whose immediate master Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola died during its construction.

広場の中央には、いわゆる五賢帝の一人であるマルクス・アウレリウス帝の騎馬像が立っている。

これはミケランジェロがオリジナルを元に制作したもので、オリジナルの騎馬像はカピトリーニ美術館に展示されている。

In the center of the square stands an equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, one of the so-called Five Good Emperors.

This was created by Michelangelo based on the original, and the original equestrian statue is on display at the Capitoline Museums.
