ローマ滞在の最後の日。
ホテルに荷物を預けて、近くのディオクレティアヌスの浴場跡や国立博物館などを見学して、テルミニ駅から次の目的地のナポリへ向かった。
巨大なテルミニ駅には、この場所に最初に着いた時と同様に、サラリーマン、観光客、地元の人々（と思しき人々）などの多くの人々が行き交っていた。
駅の構内に、大きなブックストアを見つけた。本好きとしては、少しばかり立ち寄ってみたくなったが、列車の時間の都合で、泣く泣く改札口の方に向かう。
さて、イタリアのかつての6つの都を訪ねるこの旅において、3番目の都ローマは特別な場所だった。
Last day in Rome.
After leaving my luggage at the hotel, I visited the ruins of Diocletian's baths and the National Museum nearby, and headed to Naples, the next destination, from Termini Station.
At the huge Termini station, there were many people coming and going, such as office workers, tourists, and locals (I think), just as when I first arrived at this place.
I found a big bookstore inside the station. As a book lover, I wanted to stop by for a while, but because of the train schedule, I cried and headed for the ticket gate.
Now, on this trip to visit the six former capitals of Italy, the third city, Rome, was a special place.
ローマは、言わずと知れる古代ローマの都だった。
古代ローマは、伝説では紀元前753年に建国されたと言われ、オケアドルによる476年の西ローマ帝国の滅亡まで1000年以上に渡り、このローマの地に都を置いていた。
その後は東ローマ帝国として、コンスタンチノープルで1453年まで、さらに1000年も続いた。
驚くべきは古代ローマ帝国の最盛期に建てられた、コロッセオやフォロ・ロマーノの建築群が現在まで残っていることだろう。
この旅では、そうした遺跡の数々を見ることができた。
Rome was the capital of ancient Rome.
According to legend, ancient Rome was founded in 753 B.C.E., and was the capital of Rome for over 1,000 years until the fall of the Western Roman Empire by Oqueador in 476.
After that, it continued as the Eastern Roman Empire in Constantinople until 1453 and another 1,000 years.
What is surprising is that the buildings of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, which were built during the golden age of the ancient Roman Empire, still remain today.
During this trip, I was able to see many such ruins.
西ローマ帝国滅亡後、ヨーロッパの歴史は中世とされている。
その中世が終わると、イタリアではルネッサンスが起り、ローマ教皇は宗教的な力と、ルネサンスの芸術の力を最大限に活用し、ローマに巨大な教会建築を作り、ヨーロッパを支配することを目論んだ。
その政治的な目論見は挫折してしまったが、ローマはミケランジェロやラファエロらが生み出した芸術の都として、ヨーロッパ中に大きな影響を与え続けた。
ヴァチカン市国内の巨大なサン・ピエトロ大聖堂やシスティーナ礼拝堂を目の当たりにすると、古代ローマから生まれ変わった新たな都、ローマの当時の様子を想像することができた。
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the history of Europe is considered to be the Middle Ages.
With the end of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance began in Italy, and the Pope planned to use the power of religion and the art of the Renaissance to the fullest to build a gigantic church in Rome and rule Europe. .
Although its political plans were frustrated, Rome continued to exert a great influence throughout Europe as the city of art created by Michelangelo and Raphael.
When I saw the huge St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, I could imagine what Rome was like at that time, a new city reborn from ancient Rome.
続く、バロックの時代には、ローマは2人の偉大な芸術家の活躍の地になった。
ベルニーニとカラヴァッジョだ。
この旅では、2人の作品を数多く目にすることができた。
カラヴァッジョの作品は、これまで日本で行われた展覧会などで何点かは目にしたことがあったが、ベルニーニの建築や彫刻の作品はローマに来ないと目にすることができない。
ベルニーニはローマを征服した、という言葉の意味を、この旅を通じて実感することができた。
In the Baroque era that followed, Rome became the home of two great artists.
Bernini and Caravaggio.
During this trip, I was able to see many works by the two artists.
I have seen some of Caravaggio's works at exhibitions held in Japan, but Bernini's architectural and sculptural works can only be seen in Rome.
Through this trip, I was able to realize the meaning of the phrase "Bernini conquered Rome."
その後のヨーロッパの中心は、フランスとスペイン、やがてイギリスとドイツなどへ移っていった。
そうしたヨーロッパの近代国家への歴史の中で、イタリアでも統一への意識が高まり、ついに1861年に統一を実現してイタリア王国が誕生した。
当初の首都はトリノだったが、その後、フィレンツェを経て、1871年にはこのローマに首都が移った。
その後、第2次世界大戦でイタリア王国は消滅し、現在ではローマはイタリア共和国の首都になっている。
さて、そうしたローマでの旅の思い出を振り返っているうちに、テルミニ駅から列車が出発する時間を迎えた。
次の訪問地は、ナポリだ。

As I was looking back on the memories of my trip to Rome, it was time for the train to depart from Termini station.
Next stop is Naples.
